Shawn's Campagin in Training
While different places do have different types of money. The standard and predominant is the Dwarven Currency. The reason why Dwarven Currency is always accepted is because the purity of metal in each coin (when dwarves make a gold coin, it is made of gold). There are four different types of coins which follows the conversion system found in the Players Hand Book. They are called differently then what is listed in the PHB, those names are as follows.
Platinum Piece (pp) is called a Platinum Hogshead (Hogshead or Hog for short)
Gold Piece (gp) is called a Gold Barrel (Barrel for short)
Electrum Piece (ep) is called a Electrum Kilderkin (Kilderkin for short)
Silver Piece (sp) is called a Silver Firkin (Firkin for short)
Copper Piece (cp) is called a Copper Pin (Pin for short)
This currency system mirrored what was developed by the Dwarven Brew Masters in how they measure different barrel sizes. Since it was hard to carry these different size barrels and barter, coins were given as equivalent exchange. It quickly grew in popularity with dwarves. While it no longer represents barrel sizes anymore, the money still retained the names for what they once represented.
